Theological Training

With the gradual growth of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa, the need for local theological training became apparent.  The first theological seminary was established in Stellenbosch in 1859.   This institution was transformed and integrated into the University of Stellenbosch as the Faculty of Theology in 1963. The training of ministers (pastors) in the Northern part of the country became a reality with the establishment of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Pretoria in 1937.  During the meeting of the General Synod of the DRC in 1978 in Bloemfontein, a resolution was adopted to start a Faculty of Theology at the University of the Orange Free State. In practice the actual training began in 1981, commencing with the first lectures in theology.
